[OOC: Continued from 'Draconian at the Door'.] *Callimpsest arrives at the Wolf's Howl Inn. He begins a slow walk around the outside of the building, hoping he and his colleagues will spot the floating brick before long.*

Is that it? That, up there?
*Robin points at the sky, where his keen eyes have spotted a peculiar anomaly - slightly reddish in colour, and definitely solid.*

*Squinting, more for effect than necessity* Yes... yes, it would seem to be. The best and only candidate for 'floating brick' that we are likely to find this day.
*He glances at the others.*
Agreed?

*Meliss looks up too and spots what looks like the brick immediately*
"Hmm...I most definately agree. It is indeed curious."
*She thinks for a minute, then confers with Red, who is back on her shoulder. They both nod at each other and Red clears his dragon throat*
Red: "Mr Callimpest sir, Miss Meliss has told me that it would be a good idea if I were to fly up there and have a look at it more closely if you require me to. It is a considerable distance from the ground after all".

*Zeytan also nodded in agreement.*
"Yes...yes indeed, i would agree that unless there is some sort of invasion of floating bricks this is indeed the brick we are looking for."
*Looks back down and turns to speak to Meliss and Red.*
"That would seem to be a good idea to me Mater Red as you say it is a long way....."
*Notices something*
"OH for the sake of the 7 levels of the Underworld Malark its suspended up there!!"
* Malark who had been scuttaling along ahead of the group had come to a stop when Robin had spoken and look around for what it was he was talking about.*
*As it had happaned Malark had stopped right under the floating brick. And upon looking up had seen it & not realising it was hovering had taken fright. He was nowing cowerering under it blowing white bubbles and useing his claws to cover his shell to prevent the brick cracking it if it fell on him.*
"Malark....Its stuck up there you silly Mire-Crab...its not going to fall and hit you."
*Zeytan said shakeing his head.*

Post by Young Grimwold on Apr 27, 2008 15:28:40 GMT
[OOC: Some established facts about the brick and the inn that may prove useful: The brick is hovering outside the window of the room where Young Grimwold is currently asleep. How high up? Drago and Lokie climbed from the inn roof in through the room's window, so it could well be on the top floor. (Unless it was simply the first open window Drago came to as he climbed down the wall.) How many floors does the inn have? This has never been firmly established, but we know from here that there are at least three. How far away from the window is the brick? Possibly beyond arm's length, but close enough that Drago was able to reach out and touch it with his sword. There may be ivy growing up the walls of the inn in various places. Some rooms of the inn apparently have balconies (this was established in an early thread), but there's been no balcony mentioned for the room nearest the brick. There is a tall tree somewhere nearby. Raven used it to look into the room. It's not certain whether the inn has any adjacent buildings (probably on at least one side, as alleys have been mentioned before now), so such information can be 'made up' for this thread if necessary. And the brick's 'secret', in case anyone missed it, was revealed here; though obviously none of the investigators know it yet. P.S. What the brick does or doesn't do in response to characters' actions will be determined by the Mods, and we'll let you know at appropriate moments via posts or PMs.]

*Malark's actions cause Meliss to think...no, the brick doesn't look like it's going to fall on the Mire Crab anytime soon, but still...*
"Red, if you are given permission to fly up to the brick, then please be careful. The thing does look harmless enough, but the fact it is stuck there in mid-air does indicate there could be magic in the vicinity."
*Red nods his head in acknowledgement*

*Chuckling* Yes, I believe you're in no danger, Malark. But stay a safe distance away if you'd feel better doing so!
*Turning to Red, Callimpsest is about to correct Red's pronunciation of his name; but as the dragon's been polite enough to call him "Sir", Callimpsest thinks better of it.*
By all means, fly up for a closer inspection if you wish. And perhaps our other winged asset Morwena will join you? Not that I'm giving orders, you understand. Merely suggesting.

Red: "Right away, sir!"
*He flies up to where the brick is and hovers in the air close to it. To himself*
"Might as well make the most of being able to hover like this...won't be able to do it for much longer, I'm due a growth spurt in a few days. I wonder, will I be able to sit on Meliss' shoulder after it? Anyway, back to the task in hand..."
*He flies a little bit closer to the brick and looks at it closely, taking care not to touch it...something about the usually harmless piece of masonry makes him nervous. He shouts down to Callimpsest, Zeytan and the rest of the group*
"I can't see anything untoward, but someone else may be able to see, or detect something I cannot...are you going to take a look, Miss Morwena?"

Post by Dreslin on Apr 27, 2008 17:20:39 GMT
[OOC: Continued from 'Prelude to War'.] *Dreslin has completed the walk back from the Knightmare Boarding School to the vicinity of the Wolf's Howl Inn. As he approaches, he sees a small gathering outside the building. Their attention is focused on an airborne dragon, investigating the floating brick that Dreslin saw earlier from the window of his room. Dreslin stands some distance away and quietly observes the group members, pleased at the sense of hopeful endeavour he gets from them.*

*Malark looked up at the brick again and seeing it was not moveing began to slowly move out from under it. All the time keeping an eye on it in case it decided to come crashing down.*
*When he was out from under the brick he quickly scuttled to Zeytan and up on to his shoulder.*
"You are a silly Mire-Crab Malark."
*Zeytan said and patted Malark's shell. the he looked up at Red.*
"A Brick dose not float by itself and maby its just me Master Red but i get an uneasy feeling about that peice of floating masonary...It even looks some what ominuss now i look at it again."

*Phoenixflame and Morwena were looking up as Red flew upwards, and Phoenixflame glanced at Morwena*
"Go on then Mor, I know you're just itching to get up there!"
*Morwena flew upwards, and joined Red near the brick, and looked at it, then decided to fly above it and examine it closely from the top*
"It looks just like a brick", she called out, "But it does have the markings AD on it, which makes me think that it's more than that!"
*Morwena flew as close as she could to the brick without actually landing on it*
*On the ground, Phoenixflame glanced round at Zeytan with a grin*
"Other than the brick falling on someone's head, I canl;t see any threat, unless it's an evil brick from another dimension!" She added with a laugh

Well, Headmistress, we are both sadly experienced when it comes to falling masonry, and I would say that if this particular artefact were going to drop of its own accord, it would have done so by now.
*Callimpsest turns his mind to the lettering Morwena spotted.*
AD... Anno Domini... normally to be associated with a year, but if there are no numerals alongside it, then it can't be.
It may be fair to assume, then, that this situation - either the brick, the fact that it's afloat, or both - is not pure accident. 'AD' tells us that, but little more. Whoever carved those letters could have added more, but didn't. This is, at least to the carver, something of a game.
That is my opinion, anyway.
*Callimpsest falls into a pensive silence.*

Why doesn't one of us merely touch this thing?

*Phoenixflame smiled sadly at Callimpsest*
"Yes that's true, and as you say, if it was going to fall, then it should've done so by now! As to AD, well, maybe it could be some kind of clue as to the nature of the book?"
*Morwena glanced down at Robin's comment and nodded*
"OK, here goes!"
*Morwena landed lightly on the brick and looked down at the others*
