[ModNote: Has this thread been deliberately abandoned, or just forgotten about? Either way, it doesn't seem finished to me, so I'm making this post to round it off. Raggie and Lady Mercury: if you decide you want to carry on from where you left off, feel free to ignore my post and do so (and then I'll delete my post).]
*As she changes the bedding, Raggie wonders whether to comfort the lady, but isn't sure what to say. After all, Leytan is hardly a light discussion topic. Finishing off, Raggie heads out to attend to the other rooms, shutting the door behind her. But as she leaves the lady to her own devices, she can't help wondering whether Leytan will remain his usual icy self when the lady catches up with him...*

(OOC: Ooops, sorry, been a bit distracted recently, sorry about that! Should be able to post more tho now ) *Lady Mercury winces, and gingerly moves to a more comfortable position. As the pain recedes, her breathing becomes easier and she relaxes slightly* "Where are you Leytan?!" she mutters to herself, wondering where he could've gone.....

*Time passes. Although the Wolf's Howl staff had expected Lady Mercury to be a demanding guest because of her aristocratic title, she has kept herself to herself. The inn employees, in turn, have avoided bothering her, in spite of the abundant gossip about Leytan and his impending demise. Perhaps they were worried that Lady Mercury might 'shoot the messenger' upon being told, or maybe they trusted that she would have found out by her own means. Now, it is the day of the hanging. The sun has not long risen, and all over Wolfenden, townsfolk are waking up with the belief that the Ice Killer has breathed his last (though some cautiously choose to believe otherwise). In the alley outside Lady Mercury's window, a couple of young lads are up with the lark and larking about, as they exclaim a poem they have composed.* The lads: There once was a devil named Leytan, Who went about killing and beatin'. But now comes the morn, They hanged him at dawn, And so back to Hell he's retreatin'! *The boys run away, laughing their heads off in sheer delight at what they consider to be a poetic masterpiece. If Lady Mercury isn't already awake, the noise is surely enough to jolt her from sleep.*

*Lady Mercury stiffens as she hears the lads chant, and races to the window, however the boys are already out of sight*
"what could they mean?" She murmurs to herself
*For a second lady mercury looks stricken*
"well, I guess there is no need to leave that item down with the innkeeper, I might as well just conjure it up here"
*Her eyes glow slightly as she murmurs an incantation, and the small silk covered object that she left for Leytan materializes in front of her*
"Now what am I going to do?! There's no sign of Phoenixflame, and Leytan has gone and gotten himself killed, if those chants are to be believed"
*Lady Mercury turns her back on the window as she surveys the room, wondering what her next move should be*

[OOC: Continued from here.] *Later that morning, there is knocking at Lady Mercury's door.*

*With a start, Lady Mercury turns to the door, a look of puzzlement on her face. She moves towards the door, and opens it a fraction to see who is out there. She holds one hand behind her back, in which an ornate sword has appeared, though the person at the door cannot see it*
"Can I help you?" She says, looking in bewilderment at the man standing outside the door.
*Lady Mercury doesn't recognise the man standing there*

Oh.
*Callimpsest is bewildered too. And a little intimidated by the unknown woman. Her eyes suggest that she is someone best not provoked.*
I'm sorry to disturb you. My name is Callimpsest, and I was seeking an old colleague. PhoenixFlame.

*Lady Mercury's eyes widen slightly as she hears the name of the person she was looking for before Shadow Voice told her of Leytan's whereabouts*
"I came looking for her myself, but all I found were the ruins of the school, and no sign of her..... I need to find her, but I also do not know where to look for her.... Forgive me for not being of more assistance......" *Sadness flitted across her face as she spoke*
*Behind her back, the sword had vanished, as she realised that this man was no enemy.*

The staff informed me that she is staying here. I believed this was her room. Room 14.
*Callimpsest checks the door. He sees that the numeral he'd thought was a curly 1 is in fact a 2 with the bottom chipped off. This is room 24.*
My apologies. My mind was so much more disciplined when I had a library. But you say that you know PhoenixFlame too?

*Lady Mercury smiled sadly*
"Yes, I know her, but that was a long time ago.... I haven't seen her for such a long time...."
*Lady mercury glanced at the stranger in front of her*
So you used to work at the school? That must've been interesting.... Though I'm sure Morwena caused some problems there!"

*Callimpsest gives a slight, wistful smile.*
She was one of many rather striking pets at the school. But unlike most of them, she wasn't content to stay in the familiars' quarters. And she wasn't the most sedate of library users. But I liked her more than I let on. And where "problems" are concerned, the mischief of a speaking bird was miniscule compared to other goings-on.
*Callimpsest's expression has darkened, as his unhappier memories of KMBS surface.*

*lady mercury frowns slightly* Yes, I heard that something happened there, though I have not had time to travel there myself.... I heard this from a rather dubious character known as Shadow Voice, who knows rather more than he should! I wasn't sure how truthful he was being, but he said that phoenixflame had vanished before whatever happened.... However, I'm not sure how far I trust one such as him!" *Lady mercury's face takes on a look of distaste as she mentions Shadow Voice* "I think Phoenixflame is still around, as I can still, well, "sense" her, sorry it's the best description I can give you for how i know she's alive somewhere around here.... I can give you no further information than that, I'm afraid, as it's a very hard feeling to describe..."

Shadow Voice. That name reminds me of a folk tale linked to this part of the realm... but I've met no one of that appellation.
Madam - I don't know your name, I'm afraid - the poor school appears so battle-worn that it is possible we are thinking of entirely different mishaps. I ventured back there not long ago, and found this *he holds up Morwena's tail feather* near the charred remains of some giant serpent. It suggested to me that Headmistress PhoenixFlame was present at that particular conflict, and gave me hope that she had survived it. Whilst I respect your instincts about her, it is her room at this inn - room 14, the one for which I mistook your own room - that will tell just what has become of her.

*Raven, who until this point had been in Tom's room, enters the area. Upon hearing the name Pheonixflame, she moves over to Lady Mercury* Excuse me, maam... did you say.. Pheonixflame? I was with her... I think. I don't remember much from the school, I remember the serpent, and the... battle, but after that.. not much else..

*gazes at the tail feather, and then at Raven, then to Callimpsest and gives a low tinkling laugh*
"I must apologise for my lack of manners, my name is Constance, and, well, let's say just say that Phoenixflame and I go back a very long way! Hmm, and she is in this building you say? "
*Lady Mercury turns her gaze to Raven
"It is a shame you cannot remember anymore details my dear I would've been interested to know what thsi serpent creature was, however, it cannot be helped. " She smiles gently as she says this
*I'm sure she would welcome a visit from one of her members of staff, and a prospective student as well! However, before I can see her again, there is something I must do..."
*Sadness once more passes over lady Mercury's face as she murmurs under her breath* " to make amends..."
