Callimpsest was the librarian at the Knightmare Boarding School (i.e. this forum's forerunner: kmbs.proboards12.com), a position he held with pride. The books, in turn, seemed to thrive in his presence - quite literally in fact (but then, books do tend to be quite literal). However, all that changed when an explosion tore through the school, wrecking and defiling the library. Traumatised and redundant, Callimpsest left the school.
Callimpsest ended up at the Wolf's Howl Inn, where he bumped into his old friend Young Grimwold, and played a part in rescuing Hordriss from trouble. This occurred here, with Callimpsest as a minor character within YG's posts. (Thus, I won't be bringing him in along the Path to Wolfenden, because he is already there.)
Some time later, we heard that the former librarian was lending his scholastic expertise to monks:
The first is shared with him by Callimpsest, a former librarian [OOC: from the Knightmare Boarding School] who has been helping local monks with a project to archive clue scrolls and various other documents. Callimpsest has never struck Owen as a social type, but Brother Mace - a colleague of Callimpsest's and one of the Crazed Heifer's most welcome customers - has frequently made a drinking partner of him. One afternoon, Mace introduced Callimpsest to Owen, who promptly told him of an incredible discovery he'd made: a dragon who used to live deep in the Dungeon was linked to the Owen's parents, and shared his name. The dragon has long since returned to its native Wales, but Owen is intrigued enough to seriously consider taking a holiday and journeying across the border to learn more. Callimpsest got an evening of free drinks for that, and in a reversal of roles, Mace had to help him home.
Callimpsest has remained a resident of the Wolf's Howl. As well as making his wisdom available to anyone who wants it, he has an occasional stall in the marketplace from where he loans or sells books, as well as various other trinkets. He sometimes takes his trade to neighbouring settlements too, since reading is not as popular among the folk of Wolfenden as it could be. This life is no substitute for having a library - a safe, tranquil world that he can both call his own and share with others - but he may yet find a niche and a true sense of purpose outside the school.
So here is Callimpsest: ready to stretch his legs, so to speak, as a main character on this forum. His name, by the way, is a fusion of Callimachus and palimpsest.
[OOC: Callimpsest's first IC appearance with this account is in Close But Not Quite. My post about the inspiration behind Callimpsest can be found here.]
