During Series 4, Merlin asked one of the teams, 'who didn't have to worry about the Ides of March?' And since he was playing opposites at the time, what he meant was: 'Who did have to worry about the Ides of March?' In any case, the team was clueless, and wildly guessed 'The March of Ides.' This was incorrect. The right answer was Julius Caesar, whose death was predicted to occur on the 15th of March, known in the Roman calendar as the Ides. (You might notice that it's fast approaching in our calendar.)
This incident got Merlin thinking. Caesar's grisly death must have lingered in many Romans' minds and hearts. Then he considered the Dungeon, where so many children had perished in manners arguably as gruesome. Could these deaths be leaving negative echoes in the fabric of the Dungeon? Might his alter-ego Mogdred, or some other evil figure, one day find a way to tune into these echoes and increase their power? Maybe they were doing so already. Merlin decided that he would attempt a ritual to purge at least some of these echoes.
The ritual did not go entirely to plan. Not only did Merlin get his words mixed up, but he fell asleep halfway through. When he awoke, he assumed that the ritual had been a success, and went merrily back to getting stuck in stocks and looking forward to Christmas.
Little did the senile old wizard know what he had created.
Via the mixing of his mind with the Dungeon's inner trauma, Merlin had unleashed a bizarre being known as The March of Ides, who blinks into existence every year on the Ides of March for an unspecified period of time, somewhere in the realm. Like Merlin, he is powerful, mischievous, and quite, quite mad. He often appears as a tall, dark-haired man, but not always, since his age (and sometimes even his gender) changes depending on what mood he's in. This makes him difficult for people to recognise. His most consistent trait is a sustained attempt to speak in rhyme.
The March has inherited some magical ability from Merlin: he is able to move small objects via telekinesis, though isn't always in contol of this ability; in terms of spells, he is not only fond of cheekily using the 'little spells' permitted by the forum Guidelines (TRIP, BREAK, STOP, GO) but also has at his disposal (even if he doesn't realise it) the various spells that were given to teams by Merlin yet never used (they are part of the listing here). His weaknesses consist of an outlandish array of phobias and allergies, which may be encountered in due course. Does he have a good side? Possibly.
Every now and then, the March is tormented by flashbacks to deaths of dungeoneers, turning his mad mischief into a violent brand of insanity. He is unlikely to make any friends in Wolfenden, but he is almost certain to make trouble.
Addendum 2017: The March of Ides' age-shifts are specific to his moods:
Sleep - baby
Sad - toddler
Scared - boy
Curious - pre-teen
Annoyed - early teens
Naughty - late teens
Angry - 20s
Violent - 30s
Hungry/thirsty - middle-aged
Tired - old man
Happy - woman
[ModNote: The March of Ides first appears in Bad Blood. He is last seen in They Seldom Return.]
