Treguard is an old knight from Saxon times who is the owner and steward (and now sole occupant) of Knightmare Castle, also known as "Dunshelm" - from which his heraldic name stems.
In the middle of his life, he reclaimed the entirely of his castle from a mystical and malicious being known as the Gruagach, and soon after he began welcoming young people into his home at random and setting them up on quests completely blindfolded and with no knowledge of where they were going and what they would be facing. Amazingly, nobody seemed to have a problem with this. Treguard knew it as "The Challenge", and the challengers as "Dungeoneers", as they were heading into a dungeon. He himself, being the first to master it, earned the title of "Dungeon Master".
All well and good.
After a while, young people arriving to take The Challenge waned over time, and Treguard saw that things were running effectively, albeit at a slightly slower pace. It is said that he was, at some point, forcibly removed from Dunshelm and trasnported to a foreign land known as Dabbun Gallow, where he was kept in a cage for the amusement of their king, Dickundom. He was even heard to describe his living conditions as "nasty". This was certainly not befitting a Dungeon Master of the highest caliber, and eventually he was rescued. There is a rumour that he was rescued by a young knight named Antondek, but that is just conjecture.
Treguard has been presumed missing from Knightmare for a long time - years, perhaps. However, a certain someone has recently been detected entering Knightmare Castle and staking a claim to the antechamber there, as a certain knight used to do in the old days...
Treguard has a certain degree of relatively powerful magic, as well as being an accomplished swordsman and physical strength, although not so much as he used to have in his younger days. He can keep tabs on most areas of the Knightmare Realm through the device in Knightmare Castle known as the Magic Mirror. His knowledge of the region is unparalleled, although he probably has yet to encounter many of those who have taken up residence in his absence.
You're not allowed to touch his beard.
