If you have been following Callimpsest's recent posts, you'll know that Surrounds now has a potential time travel plotline. This opens up two possibilities for other characters: 1. Joining Callimpsest as a fellow time traveller - assuming he shares his discovery and is willing to use the Tower of Time again. 2. Playing your character in the past. This might be particularly useful for characters that are otherwise frozen/grounded, such as those of us in Light Headed. Threads set in the past could be original, i.e. involving events not narrated before; or old unfinished forum threads could be revisited as a way of tying up loose ends. The intention would be not to rewrite established Surrounds/KMBS history but to write around it. If you have any questions or ideas to share, feel free to post here or PM me.

I have been reading Callimpsest's journeys, and (as well as playing the enduring game of 'spot the pun') I was wondering where this was leading!
A couple of comments and questions...
1) Playing the same character in the past is an exciting prospect - particularly, as you say, for those of us still stuck in Light Headed. - and for those of us who only play one character!
2) Is the original KMBS forum still open? Not that I want to use it as a forum, but perhaps it may be useful as a springboard for time-travelly threads set in and around the KMBS.
3) How do you intend for us to create part-time threads? Would there be a new subforum for them especially, or just an indicator to put in a thread's title to indicate it happens, in game-time terms, in the past?

1. Members with one character are of particular concern to me, as obviously any circumstances that put that character out of action do the same to the member. 2. The old KMBS forum was effectively closed and replaced by this forum's KMBS sub-board, but it remains possible to sign up, log in and post on the former. In fact, thanks to PhoenixFlame, there is still active moderation of the old haunt. The explosion that Callimpsest wants to prevent took place on the KMBS forum; so if he succeeds in going back in time to that period, and getting into the school, the action would cross back over and posts would be made there rather than here. 3. It's possible that we could end up with a story unfolding in both the present and the past, a la Quantum Leap. So at the moment I'm thinking: just with indicators. In the retcon posts made here, past tense was helpfully used rather than present tense; but that wouldn't work for members who use past tense as a matter of course (even though the forum guidelines discourage it ). Well-placed OOC notes may be enough. Members could also add '[in past]' to their display names as applicable.

Hehehe... I'd forgotten about that little moment. Ages ago in more ways than one! Another idea for time travelling threads would be to take some hints from Harry Potter. One of the films has the past and present richochet off each other without those in the past realising what exactly is/was/will be going on. ("Prisoner of Azkaban" I'm reliably informed... I think. ) That way we can enjoy the nostalgia trip without breaking continuity. It also means that getting out of a plot hole should be easier. Simply reuse whatever artifact, elf path or McGuffin you choose.

Prisoner of Azkaban, yes. And don't forget the book!
Sounds good to me. I move that, unless one is to continue an old thread, any new threads should have a standardised indicator in their titles though, such as [past]. And the player should probably preclude any action with something like:
[OOC: This thread takes place in (time), before (action).]
Just a suggestion, but I'd like to think a helpful one!

Another idea for time travelling threads would be to take some hints from Harry Potter. One of the films has the past and present richochet off each other without those in the past realising what exactly is/was/will be going on. ("Prisoner of Azkaban" I'm reliably informed... I think. ) The 1990s TV series Crime Traveller successfully used the same trick a good few years earlier than JK Rowling. Events were seen from two different perspectives and anything 'new' that the time travellers did while in the past turned out to be a part of what had already happened. This might sound self-defeating on a weekly basis but it was a refreshing approach to time travel drama and it worked. Since this thread was started (three years ago!), Callimpsest has made use of the Tower of Time to take a trip which tied up one of Surrounds' oldest loose ends and depicted previously unseen events, adding to continuity without breaking it. I've also hinted that a further trip has happened / will happen. I'm hoping to advance Callimpsest's time travel plans this year and have some ideas about how certain other characters can be involved. For the moment, I'll wait and see what ideas the rest of you may have. Thanks to recent news of a forthcoming Back to the Future musical, I'm feeling inspired!
