One of the few dragons? You mean...there were more of them?

Drassandre: Yes. Some kind and honourable, others not. We've all seen enough in Wolfenden itself to believe almost every dragon tale we hear. Haha, dragon tail! I didn't mean to say that!

*Shadow listens intently to Drassandre talking. She wonders how long Callimpsest will be and if Dreslin will even say a word (not that she cares about him).*

*Callimpsest arrives back downstairs and returns to the table.*
Sorry for taking longer than anticipated. Ah, the teas! Kind thanks, Drassandre.
*He fishes out some coins and pays the maid for the drinks.*
Any stirrings from Dreslin in my absence, perchance?

*Drassandre shakes her head.*
Drassandre: I don't think Shadow's found him to be the best company! It's a shame.

Anyways, did you get those books?

*When Drassandre was commenting about Dreslin, Callimpsest read something in Shadow's face that suggested dislike - or perhaps even prejudice. This concerns him but he shelves it for later discussion.*
My books are not as organised as I had led myself to believe... but here is one that may enli... may educate you.
*As he places the book on the table, Callimpsest does not let on that the books he was seeking among his collection had eluded him, almost as if they didn't want to be found. Those he was able to locate were cold to his touch, and he knew without testing them that they were unwilling to open, fearing what they may unleash if they gave Shadow the answers she sought. The one book that Callimpsest persuaded to be helpful is the one now sitting between the mugs of tea, with a tattered green cover and Lexicon of Knightmare in silver lettering upon it.*
Not in actual fact a lexicon, but an encyclopaedia, and one of our lands' earliest editions of it. Compiled by the monks of the Abbey of St. Severin from the tales of their visitors and edited by the redoubtable Mace & Grimwold. Some of the text within is still in Latin as used by the monks, but most has been passably translated into less scholarly English.
*Callimpsest sits down and sips his tea.*

Latin, eh? Oh well, I'll give it a try.
*Shadow opens the book and, as Callimpsest said, some of it was written in Latin. She flicked through a few pages intil she found something of interest.*
What's this about there being two sides? The Powers-That-Be and the Opposition?

*While Shadow has been perusing the Lexicon, Callimpsest has been singing quietly to his mug.*
About time you realised You are a special tea There is no one like you...
*Then he hears Shadow addressing him.*
Ah, oh, sorry, just performing a little ritual of mine. *He sets down his mug.* To your questions. Broadly speaking, in the context of questing, anyone who worked with Lord Dunshelm and his dungeoneers was of the Powers That Be and anyone who worked against them was of the Oppposition. Although, as I said, that is an early edition of the Lexicon, the terms are still in use today.

Hmm...it's just the word 'Opposition'. The term sounds strangely familiar.

*Drassandre is still standing by the table.*
Drassandre: Well I did use it a few minutes ago, hahaha! I wouldn't bother yourself about the Opposition. He's shut up shop since that book was written. At least that's what a lot of folk reckon. There's not much for him to oppose.

Oh right. Then who is this 'Lord Dunshelm' you speak of, Callimpsest?

He is Treguard, Saxon knight, Lord of Knightmare Castle - that is, his ancestral homestead of Dunshelm which he reclaimed from evil hands - Master of the Dungeon, overseer of dungeoneering. And the owner of a fine beard.

Hmm...is there anything else you could suggest in this book?

*Callimpsest hesitates, sighs and turns to the Lexicon's F section - to the entry on 'Fear, Lord'. It includes an illustration.*
