*Warlock’s Justice of The Peace Julian Feric and its chief judge Horrachio Thompson-Smyth both sat uneasily looking across Smyth’s big Oke desk at the man who was occupying the other chair.*
*The small village of Warlock was still trying to get back to normal after the chaos that had ensued but a day ago. When the notorious Mercenary Leytan had been scheduled to hang along with 3 other condemned prisoners. But thanks to a faux hangman’s assistant (now identified as another notorious criminal an Assassin called Vyrrian Wren) and an as yet unidentified female accomplice in the crowed the hanging had ended up turning into the most embarrassing day the justice system of Warlock had ever had.*
*Not only had Wren & the young lady freed Leytan but he had then in turn freed two of the other prisoners, killed the third, beaten Feric senseless, leaving him laying in a pool of mud and then left Thompson-Smyth hanging by his ankles for the gallows. While Wren had used some infernal smoke bombs to cause such havoc in the Village Square that a near riot had started and had caused a lot of damage.*
*And now to compound the indignity and humiliation this man had arrived. An Inquisitor-General sent to look into this incident and follow up on it. His card had given his name as Anton Wolfram and he had arrived early that morning. He was dressed in reasonably smart cloths his Inquisitor’s uniform were a simple pale grey shirt, brown trousers, a black waistcoat and a black cape and cloth cap that were now hanging on the hat stand in the Judges office. Also propped up against the stand was a Wooden baton which had a silver top on which was engraved the symbol of an Inquisitor.*
“So let me see if I have got this clear in my head sir.”
*Wolfram said his voice was calm but authoritative.*
“Your Justice of the Peace here arrests Leytan one of the most wanted men in this realm but neither of you notify the Dungeon Bureau of Inquisitors of this fact. Even though all law enforcement officials have been told to do so. Instead he is then put on trial here and sentenced to death. Have I got this correct so far??”
“Yes”
*Thompson-Smyth said glumly. He didn’t like where this was going.*
“Then on the eve of the hanging according to one of the jailers, Leytan is paid a visit by a young lady later identified as being the same one who later helps in his escape. Correct??”
*Feric and Smyth simply nodded.*
“Now on the day of the hanging the executioner and his assistant arrive in the town around about 5-6 am in the morning and at some point between then and the hanging the assistant meets and shares a drink with the person now identified as Vyrrian Wren another man who is on the D.B.I’s Most Wanted list and is later found in his room drunk, bound, gagged and striped of most of his clothing, which Wren then used to impersonate said assistant, gain access to the gallows and free Leytan.”
*Looks at Feric and Smyth.*
“Am I correct in this so far??”
*Both men nod again.*
“Then Leytan once freed by Wren and this un-named female. Frees 2 other prisoners a Master Jake Youngblood and a Miss Sindy Wallsing and murders the 3rd a man called Kerbs Malstorm. Knocks the stuffing out of you Mr Feric and leaves you Judge hanging upside down by your ankles from the gallows, all the while Wren is using smoke bombs to incite a riot that wrecks half the village centre.”
“Would that be a fair and accurate assessment of the story and the situation??”
*Feric looked down at his feet and shifted uncomfortably. Smyth tried to remain dignified and to reassert some control over this conversation, he cleared his throat.*
“I am afraid I do not think it is a fair assessment of the situation my dear Inquisitor Wolfram.”
“Oh you don’t do you??”
*Wolfram asked.*
“No”
*Smyth continued getting more confident.*
“The facts are as you stated them but, if you forgive me you were not there. There was no conceivable way in which anyone could have possibly foreseen what would transpire. Its all very well and good with hindsight to say that this lady should not have been allowed to see Leytan or that the executioners assistant should have been more alert for any possible attempts to undermine and replace him or that the executioner should have been paying closer attention to just who it was that was under the hood…or any number of things that now in retrospect can plainly be seen to be part of a conspiracy aimed at freeing Leytan.”
“But at the time they seemed no more then mere triflings. And if memory serves me correct my dear Inquisitor Leytan is not normally know to work with anyone.”
“This has been an unfortunate and unpleasant buissnes but In my opinion Inquisitor it is being blown out of all proportions and portrayed as some kind of catastrophic shambles which is holey untrue, while it is unquestionably an unfortunate & unwelcome ending to this sager, it is an outcome that was totally unpreventable.”
*Wolfram looked at Smyth seriously with out any expression.*
“I disagree most strongly with that Judge Smyth. I believe this has been a shambles and a very serious one at that. One that has been caused by your arrogance.”
*Smyth made to protest but Wolfram cut him off by slamming a hand on the desk.*
“You would have me believe that this whole thing was inevitable?? While it may be true that there was no way of knowing that this young lady was involved with Leytan any further then the concerned friend she professed to be to the jailer, or that Vyrrian Wren was in the area and in league with Leytan. It is a fact Judge that had you bothered to notify the D.I.B that Leytan had been captured that this whole mess would never have occurred as Leytan would now be in a maximum security jail awaiting either trial or execution!!”
*Smyth had no response.*
“And if I may say so Judge it seems to me that you do not fully grasp the ramifications of this, As it appears that the two most wanted men in the whole dungeon realm who are not linked to Lord Fear and The Opposition have joined forces and are now working together and because of your incompetence and arrogance they have been able to pull of the escape of the century and leave all of us hard working law men looking like complete and utter fools!!!”
*By the end of this Wolframs voice had risen to were he was nearly shouting at Smyth. He now closed his eyes and took a deep breath in. he exhaled and opened his eyes again and spoke once more in his calm tone of voice.*
“Now it seems that I’ve gleaned all the information I can here so I will bid you both adieu gentlemen.”
*Wolfram got up and went to get his cloak hat and baton. Smyth looked some what relived and went over to see him out.*
“Yes well goodbye Inquisitor Wolfram and don’t worry all 3 of those criminals will soon be back in our hands I can assure you.”
*Wolfram stopped and turned back to look at Smyth.*
“And I can assure you sir that they will not.”
*Smyth looked some what puzzled.*
“I beg your pardon.”
“This is now a matter for the D.B.I. We’ll be taking over from here. In fact that was why I was sent down here to find out as much as I can as I have been tasked with bring these villains to justice. Once again a good day gentlemen.”
*Before Smyth or Feric could protest Wolfram strode out of the office and into the street. He took something out of his pocket it was a small leaf of mint he put it in his mouth and began to chew it slowly, as he considered his next move.*
“Well they’ll probably have been staying outside of Warlock before this happened as none of the inns have any record of them staying here so maybe there’s some information to be gleaned in Wolfenden, it’s the biggest town in the area and its got a lot of inns were Leytan and Wren could fade into the background and wait.”
