What was the inspiration for all your characters, anyway? Why did you pick them? What drew them to you?

Cel was created because I wanted to play something a bit darker. She's not necessarily evil, or a religous cultist but there's definately aspects there. So a few ideas, bringing Ariadne in as a nice touch, a few blood rituals... the usual. I'm not sure where I'm taking her, but I have ideas.
I'm considering playing a serving wench as a secondary character, the ultimate submissive/damsel in distress. My motivation for that is, erm, interesting... let's say.

The exact story behind where Saxon came from is too long and complex to go into here (or even to be completely comfortable with), but suffice to say, I've had many story ideas for Knightmare over the last nine or ten years, and I invented Saxon for one of the most elaborate ones.

Post by Brother Strange on Dec 26, 2003 23:43:27 GMT
I've always been fascinated by the cryptic wanderer, the giver of information, knower of random stuff, starter of quests, wandering healer. Those staple bit parts of any fantasy story or game.
Some of the more famous ones include Tom Bombadil in LOTR, the various oracles in Greek and Roman tales, Fizban in Dragonlance, the Patterner and Ogion the Silent in the EarthSea books, Guynan (sp?) in Star Trek TNG, the Vorlons in B5.
They are the men and women (and stranger things) of mystery. With little or no known past, and often no known motivation for their actions, help or powers, who come to help or hinder the main characters for no obvious reason.
I have always been fascinated by who such people are, what drives them, why they do what they do. How do you become a wandering sage?
Brother strange is such a man. Whenever I saw him on Knightmare I wanted to know how he lived, how he survived the dangers of the Dungeons, how he knew what he knew, and why he would give it to adventurers for no known reason. Unlike the Powers That Be, he seemed far less helpful to the adventurers, new providing them with resources, transportation or help in a fight like the others, and only giving his knowledge and advice in exchange for some form of test of knowledge or piece of information (sometimes apprently worthless, like proverbs). Unlike most of the other nonaligned, however, he did not appear to be self-serving.
I decided to play Brother Strange because I wanted to become such a man for a brief while, and to invent (then slowly reveal) the causes and means of his strange existence on the fringes of society.

I was always a Fan of Skarkill ever sincie I saw S5 as a kid he was the one Knightmare Character I despretly wanted to play.
I got my wish when I played The Goblain Master in a school Panto, My version on this Forum is more the panto Skarkill then the TV version.
He's now a freelance, His Motives and alliances are now no longer deffined he is a willing particepent in conspiering with the Assasin Guild to murder Rob, But appaled by the crulty of Edward Deal towards Kully.
He reveals something of his history He had a sister Sinstar who was raped and murderd befro his own eyes by other Goblain Masters.
He also displays more Human emotions befreinding Kully and wanting depretly to protect her.
Edward Deal
The villianes Trader is based on Julius Scaramounger and Honesty Bartram, But part of his character I took from Correnation Street Killer Richard Hillman.
He is a man capable of great Evil and yet charming and Polite.
Deal sole love in life appers to be money and he will do anything to get it. He also has great pride and this leads him to comit horendus crimes when it is offended.

Lady Morgan Lady Morgan is based on many characters, the idea is a high nobility with a calling to be a darker person. She has great strength and is the only woman in her family due to her mother's death. Lord_Bob Lord Bob is a noble character who founded the Netherworld's prison to avenge the death of the king killed by Scareye. He is an original idea based on a lot of Knights from dungeons and dragons style campaigns.

My character of Ringmasterrob is based on any number of powerful mages you find in most fantasy books, Gandalf the grey is a large inspiration, the templar knights and the holy grail Idea inspired the grail warderns. When I created Rob I created the Netherworlds as a place where characters like him could be created and adventures were plentious!

Kully started off as a Mary-Sue in a fanfiction, as I thought Pickle was the best character ever ;D Eventually she moved away from being Pickle's sister and she is occasionally associated as being so, but mainly she is just Kully - I've developed her through Aber LARP and the KMRPG filmed in April 2003, plus other fanfictions and daydreaming. I think that's all you need to know, really!

Erh, Snowwiewolf was a name for an account on a pet site after I registered on the main knightmare forum I liked the name and Snowwie actually is just a childish, adventurous and strange part of my own personality or something.

Ursula's a character from my World of Darkness/Werewolf The Apocalypse fanfiction. (oddly enough, said fanfiction is set in the present day, but since she starts off life as a bear, she's not much different) I saw that the board needed a healer, and asked if I could play as her. Plus I was inspired because I'd just seen Brother Bear the day before.

Post by Tom Troughton on Dec 28, 2003 14:09:11 GMT
Tom Troughton, is a mixture of both my Favirote Dr. Who Patrick Troughton & My own personality.
He is a fun loveing guy with amesciefvos sence of hummor & Like me can only paly two songs on the recorder.
His first name Tom is derived from the name I was almost given as a baby Tommas.
Like Dr. Who (Patrick Troughton) he is a wander with a hit of mystery souronding him and is almost Impish or Leprecorn in his apprernce and antics.
He acts the clown but seems to be quite Inteligent and posses some Magical Skill he is a self professd Hobo Magican.
He tens to avoid becomeing involved but has a habit of getting mixed up in other people problems because of his strong sence of right and wrong.
I think thats about it.

For my Yasuke character then I bought Onimusha 2 with some of my christmas money and I thought "What if KM had a samurai?" and he developed from that, I thought he could have a little companion and on Neverwinter Nights one of my characters has a pseudodragon so that is how Pandora developed.

Post by Young Grimwold on Feb 21, 2008 13:59:03 GMT
I stumbled upon this excellent topic last year. It actually dates back to before I joined the forum. (Admittedly, it overlaps in theme a bit with 'Inspiration II'; but I see this thread as being about character inspiration, whereas the other is more about roleplay inspiration.) I hope that by resurrecting it, others will be encouraged to post in it as well. I came across Young Grimwold when rewatching Knightmare Series 6. (Surrounds is a parallel universe to the one seen in the KM episodes, where not everything has necessarily happened identically. So it is that the KM scene involving YG has never been part of the backstory of Surrounds' YG.) I really like continuity: the way that a long-running series of stories can reward a fan's attention to detail with subtle references to something from an earlier date, sometimes decades earlier. (Sci-fi universes like Star Trek and Doctor Who are particularly good for this kind of thing.) I, in turn, like exploring continuity and retcon in my own fanfiction, and expanding an established fantasy world by developing its more obscure details - finding intriguing gaps and filling them in. This is why I was drawn to Young Grimwold: he appears in only one Knightmare scene, and says nothing, but just by existing he adds something to the KM universe: most likely he is the son, previously unkown, of Mrs. Grimwold and Grimwold the Ogre, neither of whom had been seen or mentioned on Knightmare since Series 3. And so, having written a KM fanfic (I, Julius) featuring YG at the end of 2003, I chose him as my main character for this forum. Now how about the rest of you?
