*Ursula snorts in satisfaction as the wolves flee, glad to have avoided killing them. Turning back to Medusia, she pads towards her, shrinking back to Homid as she does so*
"There. I doubt they'll be back now. It's all right..."
*Kneeling beside her, Ursula strokes the Pegathor's muzzle soothingly, seeming to radiate a quiet reassurance. The switch from homicidal raging monster to compassionate human is as sudden as it is bewildering, but such is the nature of Guhral*
"There now... it'll all be over soon, don't worry."
*Ursula feels for the position of the foal again, hoping that it has moved into a better position for natural birth*

*It now seems that the pegafoal's head is almost facing the correct way, meaning that an incision may not be necessary. But the risk of Medusia bleeding to death before she can give birth is now great.*
*As she moves around the pegathor, feeling for the foal's position, Ursula notices another pool of water - the pegathor had blocked her view of it before. It had little effect on Ursula when she imbibed it; but could it be the medicament needed to make the birth go smoothly?*

*Ursula starts as she notices the pool of water, kicking herself for her failure to properly examine the clearing. She is aware that there is little time left for experimenting, decisive action must be taken, but she is also aware that the water is not natural... Against her better judgement, she scoops a double-handful of water from the pool, and cups it under Medusia's nose, hoping she will understand*
"Here... this may help you, I know there is some kind of power in it. Of course, you'd know more about its properties than I..."

*The pegathor drinks a little, as if to confirm that the water is fine. But only a little. She seems to be suggesting that although the water will help, it is faster-acting as a salve. Ursula remains a little apprehensive; might it be better just to get on with the delivery, and worry about this later? As Ursula moves her hands away from Medusia, some of the water drips out onto the ground, where Medusia has bled. And within moments, the blood is gone, absorbed somehow by the water! The dried ground glistens, ever so slightly.*

*Ursula's eyes widen as she sees the blood vanish, wondering exactly what could have happened to it. Using both hands, she liberally sluices more of the water across Medisia's belly and hindquarters, hoping it will help.*
"Well, there is no more time to investigate, though thankfully your foal is facing the right way..."
*Kneeling beside Medusia, Ursula makes a final check for the foal's position. Satisfied that it is still facing the right way, she gets ready to provide the assistance it clearly needs...*

*Several minutes pass. Medusia suffers moments of intense pain, as the pegafoal struggles to enter the world. Ursula works to aid the process, swiftly scooping water when she can to minimise bleeding. There is little waiting to be done, at this late stage...*
*Finally, the child is free. Its gender is indeterminate, and will remain so until it mates in adulthood. It is large, and somewhat clammy; but Ursula is able to hold it without it struggling. It turns a pair of golden, limpid eyes towards her - there is clear gratitude there.*
*Ursula realises how tired she is, from her exertions in the Forest. Her meditation seems a long time ago. Something is staving off total exhaustion though - perhaps it is the water? She also realises her latest duty: the pegafoal needs a name. A strange yet compelling fusion of a word presents itself. Equula. [OOC: Please, if you can do better, then feel free have Ursula change her mind!]*
*Like Pegasus at birth, the pegafoal seems developed. Able to walk, and probably able to fly, too. It needs to be introduced to its mother...*

(OOC: Sorry, been busy with website problems!)
*Sitting back on her heels with a deep sigh of exaustion, Ursula smiles down at the small creature in her arms, stroking it gently*
"Welcome to the world little one. You certainly caused us some concern." *she pauses slightly as the name springs to mind* "...I think I'll call you Equula... yes... that is your name."
*After carefully checking the Pegafoal for any signs of ill-health, Ursula lays it down by Medusia's side, close to her shoulder*
"Congratulations my friend, your child is fine. Now let me see to you..."
*Ursula gently runs her hands across Medusia's belly, sensing that there is damage within from the difficult birth. Calling upon her healing magic again, she splays both hands across Medusia's side, allowing the magic to do its work*
"There... all will be well. I will remain with you for now, in case I am needed."
*Retrieving her staff from where she left it, Ursula returns to sit at a respectful distance, watching Medusia and her foal with a pleased smile. Even her exaustion cannot dull the deep satisfaction and pleasure she feels at both having done her duty and witnessing the miracle of life*

[OOC: Maybe we should leave it there? Ursula, if/when you decide to join another adventure, you could explain your entrance by saying that the mother had recovered and flown back to KMBS or elsewhere with the pegafoal, or that the father arrived from KMBS to take care of them... Or, if another member is reading and would like to participate by threatening or simply visiting the pegathors, perhaps this could be arranged by PM and a new thread started? I am happy to 'control' the pegathors in any future adventures, if desirable. Thank you so much for your contributions, Jen - this story has been a lot of fun to plan and write. To know, from Kully's post, that others have been following and enjoying it, is the icing on the cake! ] [ModNote: This would continue with An Unwelcome Visitor.]

(OOC: Okies, sounds good to me.
It's been fun, I'm glad I got involved in this storyline! Though it's been so damn cute that I need to rinse my brain with lemon-juice...)

[ModNote: Continued from Meditations and Reflections.] *Ursular sat and watched the Pegathor foal and it's mouther contendedly, they seemed to be getting along just fine and she was about to depart quietly when......* "Come on you Goblins. His Lordship wants that Pegathor found. You Two Miremen stay close as well and be ready." *The voice came from somewere very close.* [ModNote: Nesty was last seen in GreenDragon returns.]

*Ursula's head snaps up as she hears the voice, quickly realising that it bodes no good. Scenting the air, she growls softly as she catches the reek of goblins and a new smell that reminds her of stagnant water. Getting to her feet, she stands in front of Medusia and her foal, listening for any further sounds as she whispers to the Pegathor*
"...there are foul ones afoot... we may have to find a safer place..."

*Medusia is unsettled by the strange voice. She has no trouble sensing the innate deception, and danger, that simmers beneath every syllable. Her gaze darts from Equula to Ursula, hoping that her guardian can be effective against the intruders, whose number is not yet known; and fearing that this time, blood other than her own may be shed on the forest floor.*
*Alarmingly, it seems that Medusia is not yet sufficiently healed to be able to move at any speed...*

*Setting her staff down, Ursula glances round at Medusia and Equula, clearly worrying about the safety of both*
"I will have to fight them, but do not worry, I can be a more fearsome monster than any goblin."
*A humourless smile flickers across Ursula's face as she speaks those words, then her gaze turns to Equula, and she briefly touches the foal's nose*
"Do not fear my other form little one, I take it only to protect you. You will be in no danger from me."
*Turning back to face the approaching noises of goblin and human, Ursula shifts to her Crinos form, and responds with a deafening roar of fury that even drowns out the sound of the goblin horn*
