'This Treguard Dunshelm' asked Jules, taking the oppertunity to leap back into the conversation. 'He's the fellow who owned that castle, what was it called?'
'Knightmare,' answered Kenji.
'Knightmare, that's the one. Only we have a feeling that this castle place may be somewhat relevant to our interests, so to speak. We were told earlier that regularly, there would be young visitors from another realm passing through to participate in some kind of 'greater game'. Is this right?'

*Robin nods and then interrupts.*
That would be right, Master Julian. They have been... shall we say... passing through these realms a fair few times.

*Zeytan nods in agreement with Robin.*
"Indeed many visitors and from many realms."
"Some voluntealy come here, others less so. This realm seems to like makeing...incursions into others."
*Has some of his Winterian Wine*
"Doors to it for lack of a better term seem to like to pop up in other dimensions and then dissaper again in some cases."
"And in others such as Winteria or Atlantis they remin forever."

Ah, well that is somewhat technical territory. First, there is the distinction between a land that is within this so-called 'Knightmare Realm', and a land connected to our realm from outside it. Said distinction is not always clear. For example, I would contend that Winteria and Atlantis are in this realm. But then, one cannot throw a stone from there to here, so it can't be scientifically proven either way.
Second is the distinction between interdimensional 'doors', and intradimensional doors, such as elf portals, ley paths, and other such short cuts.
It is only the loftiest mages who would claim to understand all the ins and outs, as it were. Yet arguably they're the ones who make the matter so complex by flinging so much high magic around. *Looks at Meliss.* But, er, don't tell your uncle I said that!

'So before we make any attempt to get home, we've got to work out precisely where we are in relation to where home is,' mused Kenji out loud.
'Well, best place to start is to know what exactly it was we stepped through,' Julian nodded. 'You mentioned something about ley paths, Master Callimpsest. This is a phenomena not unknown to us. In fact, ourselves and several of our associates have been studying their patterns in our town for some time now.'
'Reality is not what you'd consider your average normal town, even by Wolfenden's standards. Bizarre and outlandish things happen on a daily basis. The dead rising from the ground and becoming elected as our mayor, the anthropomorphic personification of Death leaving his duties and becoming his campaign advisor,-'
'Pirate postmen, teenage mages, insane victorian gentlemen assassins, chaos demons, a crazy homeless weirdo who changes his personality by the day-'
'You get the picture,' concluded Kenji. 'When these things first started happening, they were just chalked up as simple random occurrances. But as time went on, it became clear that these things weren't befalling our town by chance. Lots of theories were chucked about. A curse by the town's founder back in the 16th century, or possibly the influence of an ancient indian burial ground, that was a good one-'
'We even visited this town in America that was supposedly built on the mouth of Hell. Fun times were not had by all. I don't think I can look at a kebab knife the same way again,' said Julian, shuddering.
As Kenji spoke, he began scribbling furtivly on the back of a reciept from his water damaged wallet. 'Recently we've started investigating the lines of ley energy that run beneath the town, and made a discovery. In the places where the strongest lines cross, we came across one of these.'
He held up a rough sketch of a shimmering black oblong.

*Robin stares.*
Why, that's a porthole! No, hang on. Portaloo! Oh, wait...
*He digs a piece of paper out of his pocket, and reads it.*
Portal. Yes, that's it. That's a portal! I've seen them around, somewhere.
*A brief vision of flashing blue and orange circles comes to his mind, but he dispels it.*

Back in the 16th century...? How curious.
So, what investigations did you and your fellows undertake of these rectangles of the unknown?

*Phoenixflame smiled and nodded at Callimpsest's comments*
"What can I say, I don;t want to think my time as a teacher is over! I tend to agree with Callimpsest, that most of the places here, such as Winteria, are in someway connected to the realm of Knightmare itself, rather than being a separate world completely, like our own is"
*Phoenixflame and Morwena looked at the picture that was being held up*
"That looks shiny..." Morwena mused to herself and Phoenixflame gave her a conspiratorial grin then sipped at her drink, holding it up for Morwena to take a mouthful

*Zeytan smiles at Phoniexflame.*
"Indeed Headmistress i to would like to think my time as a teacher have yet to end, that is why i set myself up as a tutor."
*regards the object that Julian and Kenji have drawn.*
"Fasinating.....it kind of reminds me some what of the old Elf path portals that used to be seen in the surounding area. Although they tended to be more rectangle in shape then oblong."

'Well, we were initially just planned observing it, measuring rhythmic vibrations, trying to ascertain its point of origin, things like that. Then muggins here -'
Julian beckons to Kenji.
'- thought it would be such a wonderful idea to touch the damn thing.'
'I didn't know what came over me,' Kenji defended. 'It was completly unreal, almost like it was... I don't know, calling out to me. And there was a voice, I wish I could remember what it said.'
'So we have no idea really what it was outside of our initial theories. We left one of our professors, Hewitt, and our resident paranomal investigator Steel behind, they didn't follow us through before it closed, so I assume they're still there. Either that, or after it closed it opened elsewhere, and they're now stuck somewhere on the other side of this world, or wherever the hell it opened up.'
'Something of a mess, to be sure' said Kenji, nursing his drink. 'Still, we've done this sort of thing before. And it's fortunate we're in another realm that has the gift of magic. Admitedly it's not the brand I'm accustomed to, but I'm sure I can pick up the gist of it.'

*Phoenixflame smiled at Zeytan*
"I don;t know whether I'm cut out to be a teacher though" *she mused, half to herself, then Phoenixflame glanced over at Kenji*
"Well, you seemed to handle your magic pretty well against that dragon man, that was an interesting spell you used, what was it called?" Phoenixflame enquired
*Morwena looked appraisingly at Kenji*
"Well, I'm sure you could get the gist of it, but I wonder how long it would actually take you? Magic here is not something that you should be playing with if you don't know what you;re doing!"
*Phoenixflame frowned at Morwena*
"Mor, that's a bit hard, and I seem to remember you telling me that magic should be fun!"
*Morwena fluffed her feathers and looked at Phoenixflame*
"Well, that's true as well, but..." Morwena's voice tailed off as she looked at Phoenixflame

*Callimpsest peers at Zeytan and PhoenixFlame as they remark on their time as teachers.*
Not that either of you actually did any teaching at KMBS! "Staff member" I assume you meant. Though perhaps you each forged teaching careers elsewhere...
*He listens to Julian and Ed's comments about magic.*
From an anthropological viewpoint, magic is not unlike fire in many ways. A blessing, a curse... an inevitability. Waiting in the time of our ancestors to be discovered and harnessed. Intimidating to some, compelling to others. This realm has various different native types, the most unsafe arguably being 'technomagic', as it carries the threat of anachronism and is much favoured by the Opposition. The Powers That Be, on the other appendage, favour an almost endearing form known simply as 'spellcasting': one word, quite literally spelt out to activate; usable just once, though sometimes reversible.

*Phoenixflame grinned at Callimpsest*
"Well, that's true, especially in my case, I was more of an absent headmistress, due to unforseen circumstances!" She said with a laugh
"Its been ages since i did spellcasting like that" Phoenixflame added wistfully

[OOC: I thought I'd pause so that others could post if they wanted, but a week is probably long enough. ] *Callimpsest turns to Robin.* The project I mentioned to you earlier. Do you wish to know more? *He glances round at the others, to indicate that their interest is welcome too.*

*Meliss nods and smiles to indicate she's interested*
"One would indeed like to know"
*She pauses and realises how regal that sounded*
"Just like something my uncle would say...and do not worry about your earlier comment about mages...one actually agrees with you. But I'd never actually tell my uncle that"
*She grins in a sly way*
"And he'd be angry with me if he found out I'd actually been to another dimension myself - he still thinks I'm too young for that kind of magic. It wasn't for long that I was there, I just took a quick look round, but I'd still never hear the end of it if he found out"
*Meliss stops talking and waits for the others to give their thoughts on Callimpest's plan*
